Background

In 1992, the UK Working Group on Landmines was established as the UK arm of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). This campaign contributed to one of the most successful world-wide reforms of international law ever: none has entered into force so rapidly as the Ottawa Convention which bans the use of antipersonnel landmines. In recognition of its achievements, the campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. The Norwegian Nobel Committee applauded the campaign for changing a ban from "a vision into a feasible reality" and recognised that if offers a model for disarmament and peace.

Diana, Princess of Wales, did much to promote the cause. After her death in 1997, a Memorial Fund was formed, using money donated by the public to ensure continuing support for the organisations with which she was associated. Landmine Action is a major beneficiary of the Fund.

The UK Working Group was renamed Landmine Action in 2000, to reflect our increasing emphasis on practical humanitarian landmine work: promoting the removal and destruction of landmines and ERW, help for survivors and action against unexploded remnants of war.

TWO AWARDS SCOOPED

Landmine Action's investigations with BBC Radio 4's Today programme into the alleged illegal sale of anti-personnel mines by PW Defence won the Amnesty International Award for radio in 2003.

Our sponsor The Co-operative Bank won Business in the Community's 2003 Cause-Related Marketing Award for Excellence 2003, for its campaigning work with Landmine Action.
