Job title: Field Programmes Director

Purpose of the job: To support management of existing field programmes and support development of new programme work

Landmine Action (in process of changing its name to Action on Armed Violence) is a UK-based non-governmental organisation working to reduce the incidence and impact of armed violence around the world. Our work covers research and policy, and field-based programmes. Our field programmes are currently focused in West Africa, primarily in Liberia and Western Sahara. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to fill the role of Field Programmes Director. Based in our offices in central London, with periods of travel, the individual will support our existing field programmes, and will provide strategic leadership in programmes expansion.

This is an exciting opportunity for senior management within the humanitarian field of disarmament and development. A generous remuneration package is commensurate with the seniority of the post.

Main Responsibilities

Support management of existing country programmes, in line with agreed strategic aims; undertake field programme monitoring visits to ensure delivery of high quality programmes;

Provide technical and managerial support to field programme managers, and facilitate capacity-building and training for staff where required;

Strategise growth in field programmes, identify new field programming opportunities and lead development of programme portfolio;

Ensure funding for the operational programme by engaging  with existing donors and identifying, establishing contact with, and generating funding commitments from new donors;

Contribute to the Senior Management Team in the overall direction and management of Landmine Action;

In collaboration with field programme managers and the Finance Director, review monthly programme expenditure and ensure programmes work within budget;

Ensure Landmine Action’s operational work is operating to a high standard of quality, legally and safely.


Person Specification

Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following experience:

1. 5-7 years  directing and/or managing multiple operational programmes with international organisations (UN or NGO); 

2. Management experience in humanitarian mine action and/or at least one of the following: peacekeeping, post-conflict reconstruction, or armed violence reduction sectors;

3. Ability to design and develop new programmes and to manage programme growth;

4. Managing and supporting field programme managers  in existing programmes support and grant management; 

5. Maintaining effective programmatic systems and procedures; 

6. Successful working with major bilateral or multilateral donors, and success in securing programme funding;

7. Working strategically within a senior management team;

8. Working in and with diverse cultures.

Desirable experience.

9. High-level representational work with senior civil servants, international organisation partners and donors.

Candidates will possess the following skills and personal qualities: 

10. A strong commitment to the aims and objectives of Landmine Action;

11. Fluency in English and first-class communication skills, including writing skills; 

12. Strong strategic leadership skills, clear vision and an ability to influence and inspire;

13. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to be diplomatic, decisive and sensitive;

14. Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team;

15. Ability to work collaboratively with partner organisations around the world;

16. Strong financial skills in budgeting and monitoring expenditure;

17. Ability and willingness to travel internationally;

18. A UK work permit.

Desirable skills

19. Ability to deal with media.
