Landmine Action
Minefield in Port Howard, Falkland Islands - Simon Conway
Minefield in Port Howard, Falkland Islands

The UK Government and The Falkland Islands under Article V of the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty

Articlce V of the Mine Ban Treaty, which the UK ratified in 1998, requires the clearance of all mined areas under the states parties jurisdiction  as soon as possible, but no later than 10 years after entry into force of the Convention for that country.

The UK has not even started clearance of the Falkland Islands and has now submitted a request for a 10 year extension to its original deadline. However this request does not present any serious plans to complete or even begin this work.

Landmine Action believes that the UK Government should revise its extension request, in order that it commits the UK to concrete action. Click here for a template letter to the Foreign Secretary on this issue.
