Geneva International Centre
for Humanitarian Demining
The Geneva Centre carries out research, operational assistance and contributes
to the implementation of the Ottawa Treaty. It is a Foundation supported and
staffed by 18 governments.
German Initiative to Ban
Landmines
In 1995 a lot of German ICBL member organizations founded the "German Initiative
to Ban Landmines" and started a petition. Within a few weeks over 450,000 people
in Germany signed it in support of the five demands of the German initiative
for a total ban of all landmines. Since then over 700,000 people have signed
to support these demands.
Independent Landmine
Research
This site is aimed at "ordinary people" who are concerned about abandoned landmines;
readers are probably non-specialists who have an interest in finding out more
about the global landmine problem and maybe want to actively help rid the world
of landmines.
International Campaign to Ban
Landmines
The ICBL calls for: An international ban on the use, production, stockpiling,
and sale, transfer, or export of antipersonnel landmines. The signing, ratification,
implementation, and monitoring of the mine ban treaty. Increased resources for
humanitarian demining and mine awareness programs. Increased resources for landmine
victim rehabilitation and assistance.
International Committee
of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Throughout the 1990's, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement,
international organizations and NGO's worked relentlessly to achieve a prohibition
on anti-personnel mines, and to bring relief to mine victims and mine affected
communities.
Italian Campaign to
Ban Landmines (only in Italian)
The Italian Campain against Landmines was set up in late 1993 by a small group
of activists. It is affiliated to the ICBL and has links to other Italian humanitarian
NGO's.
Mines Action Canada
(MAC)
Mines Action Canada (MAC) is a coalition of Canadian non-governmental organizations
that came together in 1994. It is affiliated with the International Campaign
to Ban Landmines (ICBL). The coalition's primary concern is the human and socio-economic
impact of landmines.
New Zealand Campaign Against
Landmines (CALM)
CALM is the New Zealand Campaign Against Landmines. CALM is a member of ICBL,
the International Campaign to Ban Landmines which was co-winner of the Nobel
Peace Prize in December 1997.
Norwegian People's Aid
Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) is one of Norway's largest non-governmental organisations,
founded in 1939 by the Norwegian labour movement. Based upon the principles of
solidarity, unity, human dignity, peace and freedom, NPA is involved in more
than 400 projects in 30 countries.
The Diana, Princess
of Wales Memorial Fund
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund seeks to continue the Princess's humanitarian
work, in the UK and overseas. By giving grants to organisations, championing
charitable causes and creating new money for the charity sector, the Fund helps
the most disadvantaged people to change their lives. The Fund is a major donor
to mine action; it actively supports the campaign against landmines and other
explosive remnants of war.
The Lochnagar
Crater Memorial (dedicated to Landmine Action)
The Lochnagar Crater Memorial is a unique place. It is the site of one of the
biggest bomb craters of the First World War. In its historical significance and
extraordinary atmosphere it evokes fellowship and rememberence. The crater memorial
is dedicated to Landmine Action.
United Nations Mine Action
Service (UNMAS)
United Nations Mine Action (UNMAS) is the response of the United Nations system
to the global landmine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) problem. The United Nations
has been involved in humanitarian mine action activities since 1989, when a mine
action programme was initiated in Afghanistan.
