IMPROVING THE LIVES
OF POST-CONFLICT COMMUNITIES

Landmine Action is currently working with partners in two mine-affected countries, Sudan and Sri Lanka.

We are also researching the contribution to peace that mine action can make.

All this, in addition to our campaigning work on cluster bombs and ERW.

Landmine Action Week

Every year in November, Landmine Action co-ordinates a nationwide week of action to help raise awareness of the disastrous humanitarian impact of landmines on civilian populations in the aftermath of war.

Landmine Action Week also helps to create interest and support for the work we do - and the work of other organisations worldwide.

This year's Landmine Action Week runs from 1-7 November.

A variety of activities are held up and down the country, from exhibitions to market stalls, dinners and sponsored events.

This year's focus - the Ottawa Treaty

This year, Landmine Action Week takes place in the run-up to the first review of the Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel landmines. Also known as the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, the conference is due to take place November 29 - December 3 in Nairobi, Kenya.

We shall be focussing on the Ottawa Treaty: achievements so far and challenges for the future. There is no room for complacency! Much remains to be done in the next five years in the struggle for a mine-free world:

  • governments must be reminded of their obligations under the Treaty
  • funding for mine action needs to be increased
  • remaining mined areas need to be cleared
  • stockpiles must be destroyed

If you or your organisation would like to take part this year, we can provide help with ideas, sponsorship forms, press information, letters to MPs.
