Article 5 of the Ottawa Treaty Each State Party is obliged to “destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in mined areas under its jurisdiction or control, as soon as possible but not later than ten years after the entry into force of this Convention for that State Party”. This issue looks at the progress of states towards a mine free world. |

The signing of a comprehensive peace agreement in Sudan, is expected towards the end of the year, bringing an end to Africa’s longest running conflict. Mine action activities, which have already begun on both sides of the conflict, are likely to significantly increase following a peace agreement – offering hope to the millions whose lives are under threat. |
