Information gathering
SLIRI is collecting data on the extent of the landmine and UXO problem in the former conflict zones throughout Sudan. So far, over 3,500 mine incidents have been recorded by SLIRI, which is helping to build up a good picture of the scale of the problem in the country.
This information will help inform local and national mine action planning and is already assisting Landmine Action/SLIRI demining teams in prioritising tasks in the Nuba Mountains.
Our approach
SLIRI has established local Sector Operations Centres (SOCs) in some of the most mine affected areas of the country. From these centres, SLIRI staff reach out to the local community to encourage them to report mine incidents. This community-based approach is guided by the following core beliefs:
• That information vital for the prioritisation of mine action responses resides within local communities.
• That the needs of local mine affected communities should be the focus of all mine action planning.
• That local people must be involved in the prioritisation of mine action responses.

SLIRI is based in some of the most mine affected areas of the country. There are currently 14 local SLIRI ‘Sector Operations Centres’ staffed by a dedicated team of people who co-ordinate our activities. The map below shows the locations of these centres.
